"One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard, Rainsford."
Here Rainsford is desperately swimming away from General Zaroff because he is afraid that he will be killed. However General Zaroff did not expect him to swim away.
Rainsford surprised the General by showing up in his room. Rainsford has won the game, but his newfound savageness wants to make sure that the General is gone for good, so the two face off. The two characters face off and the loser gets eaten by the dogs. (character vs. character)
General Zaroff loses the battle and plunges out of the window and was devoured by a pack of his own hounds. While Rainsford sleeps peacefully in the General's bed.
