  • Ralph J Bunche was born on August 7, 1904 In Detroit. His parents were Fred Bunche and Olive Agnes Johnson Bunche. His father was a barber and his mother was a musician.

  • Ralph's parents became sick and the family moved to Albuquerque, hoping the better climate would help their health. Sadly, Ralph's parents died, and he went to live with his Grandmother in Los Angeles.

  • Ralph was a good student. He graduated from Jefferson High School, went to UCLA, then to Harvard University, where he earned his MA in 1928. He also studied political science at Northwestern University.
  • In 1930, Ralph married Ruth Ethel Harris and had three kids. He went back to Harvard University to earn his doctorate, which he got in 1934. He also was a professor of political science at Howard University.
  • He published a book called "A World View of Race" In 1937. He became the first African American to win a Nobel Peace Prize, which he won in 1950 for his mediation of the Arab-Israeli Conflict during the founding of Israel.

  • He was also appointed head of UN Palestine Commission in 1948.
  • Ralph also was Undersecretary of the US from 1955 to 1971. He established the first political science department at a historically black collage, Howard University. He did many other things to improve our world, and was a great man.
