  • "My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically I'm allergic to the world. I don't leave my house, have not left in seventeen years. My disease is called SCID. Oh, and my name is Madeline." (Yoon 3)
  • Exposition
  • "Then I see him. He's tall, lean, and wearing all black: black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black cap that covers his hair completely. He's white with a pale honey tan and his face is starkly angular... Our eyes meet... His name is Olly. There is only one problem, I can't meet him. (Yoon 20, 21)
  • Soon, Madeline's nurse arranges for them to meet. Madeline doesn't get sick afterwards.
  • Conflict
  • They see each other more and more....
  • We're going to Hawaii and we're leaving tonight. I got us plane tickets. I booked us a hotel. I know that I can't leave without getting sick but I'll be fine. Let's go. (Yoon 178)
  • Rising Action
  • "Pain radiates out and crashes into the nerves behind my eyes. My body is a fresh bruise. Even my skin hurts. I need to go to the hospital." (Yoon 234)
  • "Jesus, Maddy, you're burning up." (Yoon 235)
  • They go to the hospital and fly home.
  • Climax
  • Earlier that day, Madeline finds something in her mail.
  • "How could you? I spent my whole life trying to keep you safe!"
  • Madeline leaves for New York to go find Olly who had just moved.
  • "But mom! The doctors sent me something in the mail! They say I'm not sick! I've never been sick. You lied to me!" (Yoon 277)
  • Falling Action
  • Hi Olly.
  • Hi Maddy.
  • Resolution
