After the men leave the old man in search of Death, they make their way to a tree to find florins on the ground. When they found the money they stopped searching for Death and decided that they would move all the money they found during the night so they protected it all through the day. The men guarded the money very well and had agreed to split it into thirds.
“We’ll spend it as we ought. God’s precious dignity!”
Let's divide the treasure so we can all be extremely rich when we get back
If we kill one person we can split the treasure among two of us
After the men found the gold they agreed to send the youngest man back down to the village to gather supplies. While the man was away the other two decided to get rid of the youngest when he came back so they could split the gold in half rather than in thirds. As the youngest was making his way back to the gold the other two guards jumped and killed him.
“Now for a drink. Sit down and let’s be merry, for later on there’ll be a corpse to bury… reaching for a sup, he took a bottle of poison up… and drank from his companion, nothing loth drank from it also.”
