The story of how I found out things between my parents were as good as they pretended they were.
The first time I witnessed my parents fighting, I was 8 and I had no idea why they were upset with each other at the time. I didn't see them argue like that again for a long time but I still thought in the back of my mind something wasn't right between them.
I came home from school one day when I was 11 to find my dad and some woman I had never seen before in the kitchen. I ran out, shocked, to make sure I wasn't in someone else's house. To my disappointment, I wasn't, so I walked over to my friend Ian's house and convinced myself it was just my mom with entirely new hair and clothes.
From age 14 to 16, I sort of went through that "my parents are getting divorced" stage of my life. It was harder being able to deal with both of their feelings at the same time than the actual idea of them splitting up. But our relationships are still as strong as ever and I'm glad I can say it's an obstacle in my life I was able to get past.
