Storyboard Text

  • In 1618, Ferdinand II of Bohemia began to dictate the religious activities of his subjects, sparking much conflict among protestants.
  • In 1621, Ferdinand turned against protestant groups in Germany and claimed that German land belongs to the catholic church.
  • In 1630 an army led by King Gustavus with the support of France drove Imperialists out of Germany.
  • In 1634 a Spanish army defeated the Swedish field army and forced the Protestants out of southern Germany. This lead to France declaring war on Spain in 1635 and then on the emperor in 1636.
  • France declares itself victorious over the Spanish in 1643 and Sweden defeats the Imperialists at Jankau in 1645
  • Treaties of the Peace of Westphalia were signed, declaring the end of the 30 years' war. This set boundaries between catholic and protestant lands and ended the age of religious warfare.
