"'I'm not getting on a plane,' she said, lifting her glasses to swipe at her eyes. 'Gus is in the hospital'" (139).
"'I don't give a shit. I'll be in the hospital, or worse, if this keeps up'" (139).
"...--she felt the secret shame of wanting Gus... That he loved her. He wanted to always be with her...He would marry her...under the light they never turned off, she would take poison and be rid of herself" (276).
"Even when she had lain in Gus's arms, she had never imagined the rest of her life without her parents, her uncles and aunts, her brothers" (372).
Climax In one of the climaxes of this book, Gus ends up in a hospital after a supposed car accident where his brakes gave out, although Afia claims that just the week before he'd gotten them checked and it was determined they were safe for the icy winter roads. Shahid threatens to send her home on a plane because she'd ruined their honor.
Falling Action Throughout the ending of the book it's a series of disappointment and acceptance for both Afia's family and for the man she was engaged to, Zardad's. Although they were upset about her decision, she finally broke the brick wall they built around themselves and opened their eyes to a new world.
Resolution All in all, Afia and Gus do make it together, and do get married in America. Although it wasn't widely accepted, Gus proved himself worthy for her hand in marriage.
