  • There is about 2000 of us Europeans along the coast of NZ
  • Since the late 18th century sealers had sailed across from Australia to hunt us for our oil and fur. they depended on Maoris for enough food to survive.
  • NZ's East Coast is on the whale migration path to feeding grounds in the Antarctic so whalers soon join the sealers in setting up base in Shelford bays, harbours
  • we're traders and we need to buy flax to make ropes and nets to catch the whales and seals
  • I'm going to teach you all about a person called God
  • it was usually pretty friendly between Maoris and the European settlers but there were a few attacks
