In the 17th century, trenches were developed when a French engineer was deemed the task to come up with a strategic way to attack fortresses.
Sometimes the soldiers would stack the dead bodies on the edge of the trench to protect them further from bullets and explosions.
Conditions in the trenches were horrible. There was millions of rats infesting the trenches because of the dead bodies, the toilets often overflowed into the main walkway, and there was constant dying all around. It was noisy, and it was dirty. Diseases spread throughout the the trenches and infected many people.
