PILIAVIN ET AL
PILIAVIN ET AL: train emergency experiment
Within the experiment, 4 groups of 4 pyschology students took part and each group contained 2 males, one being the victim, one being the model, and 2 females who took notes discreetly. The 2 male victims would either pretend to be drunk or ill. One of the male victims was black.
They would do this experiment weekdays from 11am to 3pm for 3 months, and board the train on the New York 8th Avenue subway.
After 70 seconds had passed, the victim would 'collapse'. Until he recieved help, he would lie on the floor and look up in pain in an area called the crictical area.
The model would go to help the victim within 1 of 4 situations: after 70 or 150 secs in the critical area or after 70 or 150 secs in the adjacent area. They would raise the victim to a seated position and remain with them for the rest of the journey.
Once the train reached it's destination, the experimenters would all get off at the stop and then return to the opposite side of the subway and re-do the experiement.
