  • lets find out if homicide rates are linked to local life expectancy in Chicago.
  • that sounds like an interesting idea!
  • Maybe we could use survey data from police records and other things such as school records and demographic records. . .
  • Which can easily be gathered by the census.
  • Daly & Wilson examined local communities in Chicago that had a lower than average male life expectancies, varying from 54.3 to 77.4 years.
  • community hall
  • They then plotted various correlations between the data collected.
  • male life expectancies
  • Results: Life expectancy proved to be the best predictor of neighbourhood-specific homicide rates. Ranged from 1.3 to 156 homicides per 100,000 persons per anum. negative correlation at -0.88.
  • Is it really possible that young men in these neighbourhoods actually discounted the future and expected shorter lives?
  • Therefore it would escalate the likelihood that they would increase their risk taking for short term rewards.
  • Key finding: The neighbourhood-specific rate of absenteeism from school was also negatively correlated with life expectancy.
  • We believe that young adults are still driven by ancient adaptive traits such as risk taking and early reproduction, which is a rational response from their upbringing.
