The Crucible, Miller wrote the Crucible to help readers understand the circumstances of the witchcraft trials, and the mood for a time where no one was safe. Based in Salem Massachusetts in 1692.
Giles Corey was a soft spoken man. He showed courage and respect for his wife and was an honorable man. "They be telling lies about my wife, sir." pg. 178
Giles was worried because if he was convicted of witchcraft, he would lose their land and his family wouldn't have anywhere to go.
Giles went mute in order to make sure his family could keep his land. His motive was to keep his family safe and free from persecution.
By remaining mute, he had total control over himself and the land that belonged to him. He didn't necessarily want this power, but if he didn't have it, he would lose everything.
Hysteria is the reason for Giles Corey being pressed. People believed he was involved in witchcraft, and they took his silence as it being the truth.
