He told a story. That helped capture our attention.
"I would rather see my little girls die now still believing in God, than have them grow up under communism and one day die no longer believing in God".
"Mr. Gorbachev open this gate...Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall!"
He sent a bold message to our enemy. This was a message he knew every American wanted sent.
"It is all part of taking a chance and expanding man's horizons, the future does not belong to the faint heartened, it belongs to the brave."
He was emotional with his people. This put him on the same level as us, and gained our respect and trust.
"There is no choice between peace and war, only between fight or surrender. If we continue to accommodate, continue to back and retreat, eventually we have to face the final demand, the ultimatum."
He stood strong in his explanation of war, and he was optimistic and demanding. This helped the people understand why we were going to war.
"There are reasons why it happened, but no excuses. It was a mistake."
He was honest and admitted he made a mistake. This showed the people he was genuine and he could take responsibility.
"After two-hundred years, two centuries, she still stands strong and true on her ridge and her glow is held steady no matter what storm."
He shared his picture of the American dream. This gave us hope, and helped us to believe in our own American dream.
