  • So, where should I sign?
  • Off with his head!!!!
  • Oh wow!
  • In 1628, Charles was forced to call Parliament again. This time it refused to grant him anymore money until he signed a document, the Petition of Right. He then agreed to the petition, which was very important. It set fourth the idea that the law was higher than the king.
  • Finally!!!
  • In 1649, Cromwell and the Puritans brought Charles to trial for treason against Parliament. He was guilty and sentenced to death. The execution was revolutionary.
  • Victory is ours!!!
  • Cromwell died on September 3rd, 1658. His body was embalmed until he was buried on November 22nd.
  • Lets talk about the Bill of Rights...
  • During Charles II reign, Parliament passed an important guarantee of freedom, habeas corpus. This 1679 law gave every prisoner the right to obtain a writ or document ordering that the prisoner be brought before a judge to specify the charges.
  • Seven members of Parliament invited William and Mary to overthrow James for the sake of Protestantism. In 1688, when William lead his army to London, James fled to France. This overthrow of the King was called the Glorious Revolution.
  • England became not an absolute monarchy but a constitutional monarchy, where laws limited the ruler's power. To make the the limits of royal power clear, Parliament drafted a Bill of Rights. Both William and Mary consented to the limits on their royal power.
