  • The Empire's Chief City
  • My husband and I are part of the Patrician class in Rome. The Patrician class is the wealthier of the two classes.
  • We are Plebeians, the lower class of ancient Rome. My wife is a local artisan, and I am a slave to the emporor
  • Why hello! I am the emperor and as you can see I am standing in front of my luxurious palace on top of the hill. I have some armed guards guarding my living space, and my house is at a very nice location seeinng I hjave the forum right at the foot of the hill.
  • Where Did the Emperor Reside?
  • The Forum
  • Hello my lady...What brings you here to the forum?
  • Come buy our pottery!
  • Oh just shopping around maybe for some pottery or new clothing.
  • This is Rome. It was one of the largest cities of the Ancient World. So big that by AD 1 it already had more than 1 million people living there. From every part of the Roman Empire people traveled to Rome.
  • Where Did the Plebeians Reside?
  • We are not very skilled, so we are not very fortunate. We live in these apartments which are not very tidy and get very crowded!
  • Here is the emperor's home. His home is located on top of a great hill and at the foot of the hill is the forum, which is a large open marketplace area, much like the malls that you and me may visit today. Many Patrician citizens Roman live around me.
  • Breads & Circuses - Chariot Races
  • Ooooohhh! I gotta beat you in this chariot race!
  • As you can see, here at the forum people come to gather, shop, and do many other things. Here you can see two artisans are selling their work over at the tent, and some others are just shopping around.
  • Breads & Circuses - Gladiator Battles
  • As you are on your tour, you will notice that we are gladiators who are about to fight each other until one of or deaths. The spectators are very respectful of us and sometimes this is fun for us but sadly we can loose our lives doing so.
  • This is the crowded area where the Plebeians lived. Oftentimes food was tossed into the streets and buildings sometimes caught fire or collapsed. These apartment buildings were not very luxurious, this was because many of the lower class citizens either had no job, or worked unskilled labor.
  • Here are at the chariot race which is part of the breads and circuses. Breads and circuses are when Roman leaders try to gain the attention of Rome's less wealthy citizens. We are located in the Circus Maximus which is an arena for events, it even seats 150,000 people...or even more! Today there is a chariot race going on to try to get the poor citizen's attention.
  • GOOOOOOOOO! C'MON YOU CAN DO IT!!!
  • Also in the Circus Maximus arena there are some gladiator battles going on. People - gladiators today are fighting each other, sadly, until their death. Many of the gladiators were slaves, prisoners of war, criminals, or less fortunate and poor people. These men were admired by the spectators for their bravery and skills that they have.
