  • The Minoans
  • This is Crete. It is the center of our civilization. We make our wealth from trade. By 2000 B.C. our ships controlled the eastern Mediterranean Sea, and they carried goods to foreign ports and kept the sea secure from pirates.
  • And this is the palace of Knossos. We keep all are riches of society here. It has many different rooms- private quarters and storerooms full of oil, wine, and grain.
  • We make our ships from oak and cedar and we sail as far away as Egypt and Syria. We trade pottery and stone vases for ivory and metals.
  • The Mycenaeans
  • After the Minoan empire mysteriously fell, we invaded Greece. We are originally from central Asia. Our palaces are always busy.
  • We conquered Crete and nearby islands. But we are even prouder with our deeds in battle. Our most famous victory is the Trojan War because our amazing king Agamemnon used trickery to win.
  • Around 14000 B.C., we replaced the Minoans as the major power on the Mediterranean. We trade widely, sailed to Egypt and southern Italy.
  • After our kingdoms were set up, Minoan traders started visiting us. Because of that we developed many Minoan cultures. We copied their bronze work and how they built their ships. We even started worshiping the same gods and goddesses.
  • The Dark Ages
  • Although the Dark Ages weren't that bad because most of the population from the mainland left to go to islands on the Aegean Sea. Other Greeks moved west.
  • The years between 1100 and 750 B.C. were very hard. Trade slowed and poverty was major. Farmers only grew enough food for themselves and their families. People stopped teaching and eventually the written language was gone. That was why we named it The Dark Age.
  • By 1200 B.C. we were left devastated. Many earthquakes and fighting against our kingdoms destroyed our hilltop forts. By 1100 B.C. we collapsed.
