  • "My mother can make me feel good just by walking into the room"(32-33).
  • "...I thought I saw anxiety in her eyes-the same fear I'd seen in Grover during the bus ride..."(36).
  • "We watched the body of the hellhound melt into shadow, soaking into the ground until it disappeared"(125).
  • Characterization This interaction is between Percy and his mom at the beginning of the book when we are introduced to her. Percy's thought shows the nature of his mother's character. A very nice and sweet person.
  • "Young man, I would really be less casual about throwing those names around if I were you"(67).
  • Flashback Percy sees a fear in his mom's eyes and he has seen it before with his friend Grover on the field trip bus ride.

  • Imagery Percy and his friends are attacked by a hellhound. Percy kills it and gives us the description of how it exited.
  • Motif Percy is told several times not to say the names of gods. In this instance it is Mr. D saying this to Percy at camp.
  • Theme Medusa tells Percy while they are fighting that The Gray-Eyed One, Athena, has turned her into what she is. This goes along with a possible theme of blaming and holding grudges in this book.
