  • The first Punic War started due to territorial issues between the Carthaginians and Romans. The winner would take all the glory and control. The war was mainly fought on the sea giving the Romans a disadvantage because many soldiers had never been out of Italy and fought any naval battles.
  • Hamilcar Barca, Hannibal's father, made him take a oath to carry on his hatred of the Roman's and to crush Rome.
  • Hannibal decided to attack Rome, but also did the impossible and crossed the alps in the winter. By the time they reached Italy, Hannibal's army had gone from 98,000 to 26,000.
  • Hannibal also took very great care of his army and made sure that his army was well-rested and well-fed to fight the next day. He won battle after battle with this strategy and weakened the Romans as he marched on.
  • Hannibal would've completely dominated Italy if he had not been lured back to Carthage to deal with Scipio and his attacks, Hannibal lost to Scipio, was forced into exile, and a peace treaty was made between Carthage and Rome, only to be broken
