Even though the old man never did anything wrong, the narrator wanted to kill him. He wanted to get rid of him and "the power of his eye". "It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain; but once conceived, it haunted me day and night."
The narrator went to the old man's room every night to watch him sleeping. "And this I did for seven long nights --every night just at midnight"
Finally, the day came. The narrator is decided to kill the old man that night.
The old man was dead and the narrator regrets nothing. He's happy.
The narrator got rid of the body.
Some police officers knock on their door. He confesses his crime.
