Elijah J McCoy was born in Canada on May 2, 1844. He has 11 brothers and sisters. His parents George and Emilia McCoy were former slaves, who escaped via the underground railroads.
In 1847, Elijah and his large family returned to the United States, settling in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
In 1860, Elijahs parents sent him off to Scottland to train as an engineer. He did quite well there and became a fully certified mechanical engineer.
In 1863 he moved to Ypsilanti, MI, where he was hired as an engineer. 5 years later Elijah married Ann Elizabeth Stewart, who died 4 years later.
In 1872, he applied and received his first patent for his lubricating cup.
In 1873, Elijah remarried to Mary Eleanora Delaney. They spent the next 50 years together.
