  • Achilles was known as a hero in Greek Mythology. He was the greatest warrior of the army of Agamemnon during the Trojan War.
  • He was the son of Peleus, king of the Myrmidons, and Thetis, a sea nymph.
  • Achilles was born in Thessaly, Greece. It is said that Thetis dipped Achilles in the waters of the River Styx so he would be immortal. However, the heel by which she held him was untouched, which would one day lead to his final fate. {"Archilles' Heel"}
  • Achilles led 50 ships during the Trojan War. He was killed by Paris with an arrow that landed on his heel that had been poisoned. Shield symbolize the world beyond the battlefield.
  • Achilles is mentioned in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Dante's Inferno, W.H. Auden's Poem "The Shield of Achilles," John Milton's Paradise Lost, novel The Walls of Troy, etc.
  • The Iliad is an ancient Greek poem in dactylic hexameter, set during the Trojan War that Achilles was a part of.
