The story begins when the narrator and Fortunado meet at the carnival .Fortunado was being rude to the narrator and now he wants revenge!
The narrator "runs" into Fortunado and makes up a story saying he received a barrel of Amontillado. The narrator then tells Fortunado that he is going to see another wine maker, Luchesi, to see if the wine is real. Fortunado gets mad because he is the master of wine.
Then Fortunado gets upset at the narrator and insists that he will test the wine him self. Fortunado follows the narrator down into the deep, dark, catacombs.
When walking through the catacombs, the narrator gives Fortunado many chances to go back, but he refuses to turn around . While they are walking, the narrator gives Fortunado wine which results in him getting drunk.
Once they reach the end of the catacombs the narrator takes Fortunado and chains him to the catacomb wall. He starts to trap him in by building a wall out of stones and mortar .
The narrator sits back and enjoys listening to Fortunado's cries for help. He then proceeds to finish the wall. When the wall is finished, Fortunado walks away like nothing ever happened. The wall stays untouched till this day.
