  • The Seljuk Turks
  • The First Crusade
  • Jerusalem
  • The Second Crusade
  • The Seljuk Turks were Central Asian people that were eager to expand their territory. After taking over Palestine, it became unsafe for travel because the Turks would attack Christian pilgrims. Christians feared they couldn't visit Jerusalem, their holy city, but this event paved the way to crusades.
  • The Third Crusade
  • The first crusade involved about 30,000 men. On June 1098, a traitor led the crusaders into the city of Antioch in Syria, and it fell to the Christians. In June 1099, the crusaders surrounded Jerusalem and made the enemy surrender. It was a victory for the Christians.
  • King Richard I of England
  • FIGHT!
  • As the Muslims started to band together, they fought back more effectively; in 1144, they captured Edessa, a capital. When the Christians tried to fight back, the crusade ended as a failure. In the end, the Muslims won the second crusade
  • Later Crusades
  • In 1180, the great sultan Salah al-Din had formed the largest Muslim empire since the Seljuks. He quickly took back most of Palestine and captured Jerusalem, but King Richard rallied against him and forced surrender to the Palestians in the town of Acre. In 1192, after much brutal fighting, the two leaders signed a peace treaty allowing each side to keep a part of land
  • Peace Treaty
  • King Richard I of England, known as Richard the Lionheart led fights against Salah al-Din. He forced the Palestians to surrender in Acres, but when he tried to take back Jerusalem, his armies were not strong enough.
  • The crusades in the middle east continued for another 100 years. They were mostly popular movements, such as the Children's Crusade, instead of military campaigns. But none of these crusades succeeded, and the Muslims instead began gaining more of their land. In the end, the taking of Acres ended 200 years of Christian Kingdoms in the holy land.
  • Give us back Jerusalem!
