Hi! I'm Blanche Dubois!
Blanche is a sensitive, insecure character that "doesn't want realism" but "prefers magic" and tells "what ought to be the truth". She lives for a mans sexual admiration to mask her flaws.
I don't want realism. I want magic! Yes, yes, magic! I try to give that to people. I misrepresent things to them. I don't tell truth, I tell what ought to be truth. And if that is sinful, then let me be damned for it!
This scene represents Blanche's manifestation of her own reality and what she believes should be truth even though it is far from it. Her world of magic renders a picture of her perfection and her purity as a woman, which is what is desired in that time period.
Look who's coming! My Rosenkavelier! Bow to me first...now present them! Ahhh-Merciii!
This scene briefly suggests Blanche's "southern aristocracy" as well as her intelligence and arrogance reflected through her request to be praised. In this time period, women were expected to be treated with courtly manners by the men.
Throughout history, women have evolved from so many circumstances and are held to certain expectations. Women have to be pure, elegant, graceful, nurturing, and well mannered. They are told to "dot their I's" and to not let "desire" take a toll on your actions for it is sinful to give into lust. Blanche has given into her weaknesses which causes her to create an artificial persona for herself as well as others. She gives society what it wants to hear in order to manifest the image of perfection. These results of pressure reflect what women face today as we continue to evolve further.
