Boy Willie brings home a basket and a truckload full of watermelons with the plan to sell the melons and the family's piano to buy a new piece of land.
Berniece argues with Boy Willie throughout the whole story because she doesn't want to sell the piano. A ghost of Sutter, the man who Boy Willie wants to buy the land from, later appears in the story haunting the family about the piano.
Bernice finally banishes the ghost of Sutter by playing her piano, almost as if it was magic. After this, Boy Willie decides to not sell the piano and knows now to value his ancestors.
