  • Students knew fractions but couldn't apply them to real-life problems...
  • My class was a complete failure!

  • When I do my lesson planning, I design the unit backwards from the big idea to real-problem situations
  • My students know the textbook from cover to cover but still don't do it well on tests
  • For me, textbooks are only a guide, a resource to what I teach, but not an only source.
  • UbD is a curriculum planning approach to enhance meaningful understanding and transfer of learning in any discipline.
  • We must do more than teach rote facts or teach for coverage. We must teach for understanding.
  • UbD is different - in order to begin the lesson planning process, we must start at the end: clarify results and evidence of them before planning the learning experiences.
  • The point of school is not to simply excell in each class, but to be able to use one's learning in different settings.
  • Right, we want students, in the end, to be able to do with what they have learned.
  • UbD avoids treating the textbook as implementing the curriculum rather than a resource and also teaching with no clear purposes or priorities.
  • In UbD teachers are perceived as coaches of sudent understanding. Teachers ensure that learning happens and do not assume that what is beng taught is being learned.
  • The main corner stone of UbD is that factual knowledge and skills are not taught for their own sake, but as a means to larger ends - learners will be able to use their learning far beyond the classroom.
