Tariff of Abominations
The Tariff of Abominations was when the US placed an outrageous tax on all imported goods. In which, the south was very mad and, it hurt their economy but, it gave the northerners more customers. As well as, the south no longer wanted imported goods from countries. Because the tariffs made the prices such an expensive amount. So, in turn, they bought from the factories in the north.
Henry Clay's Solution
John Calhoun, the President of South Carolina, believed in state's rights. He nullified this tax and said this state would not pay this tax, in conclusion, he supported the southerners. John Calhoun supports South Carolina's Perspective.
South Carolina's Perspective
Andrew Jackson passed a protective tariff on imported goods in 1828. Southerners were upset with this new law because they buy most of their stuff from Europe, and now their imports will be way more expensive and less affordable. Northerners liked the tariff because it gave their factories more business. Andrew Jackson seeks the help of Congress because he can't complete everything on his own.
The Force Bill
Henry Clay created and wrote the Compromise Tariff of 1830 to solve or settle the problem with the outrageous tariffs in the US. In which, he decided to reduce the amount for the colonists to be content or happy.
South Carolina's Perspective was, they thought, they could make their own rules since it was their own state. So they tolled all the other states to come to South Carolina so they wouldn't have to pay tariffs on imported goods. Although the government disagreed and said that they didn't have the power to do that. Wanted to nullify the Tariff of Abominations. As well as, they believed in having state's rights.
The Force Bill was when Congress finally came to the decision to lower the tariffs. Congress passed the Force Bill of 1830 which demanded all states to pay the new and much more reasonable amount of tax on imported goods. The states were okay with the new tariff and agreed it was fair. In the end, both north and south were okay and content about the new tariff, and feel they both came out on top.
