  • Although the Emancipation Proclamation abolished slavery, many African Americans remained slaves.
  • LOL you are still my slave
  • I wish slavery would be abolished
  • There was no federal policy on fugitive slaves so Union commanders were forced to make their own decisions. Many had African Americans work non combat jobs
  • We are escaped slaves and we want to help!!
  • Nahh You would be a bad soldier. so you can clean.
  • General Order 143 was Passed allowing the "organization of colored troops" Union Commanders began to see that colored troops were just as good as white ones.
  • Thanks to Order 143 We can fight!
  • Those guys are actually pretty good soldiers
  • Despite there contribution to the war effort, blacks still faced racism and were often given poor weapons. They were paid as laborers not soldiers and earned less.
  • I get these brand new guns, and you can use this crappy gun!
  • That's not fair
  • And you are going to be paid less
  • We will not pick up our guns until we get equal pay!
  • One group of Black soldiers tried to get equal pay by refusing to use their weapons until they were treated equally. Their leader was tried for treason and executed.
