In 732, Abd er Rahman and his soldiers were planning to invade the northern border of Frankish territories with his soldiers.
Six days went by, and neither the Muslims or the Franks wanted to attack first. The Franks had the higher ground, and were prepared for the frigid temperatures. The Muslims had the disadvantage with lower ground, and weren’t prepared. Since Abd er Rahman didn’t want his soldiers to freeze, the battle started.
In previous battles, the Muslims had won because of their advanced weapons.
Frankish soldiers went into the Muslim camps and made the Muslims retreat. According to Muslim and Frankish sources, the battle lasted 1-2 days.
Many people believe that if Charles Martel had died in battle, the Muslims easily would have invaded Europe, and took all of the land.
Frankish people celebrated their victory by fashioning bread in a crescent moon, an Islamic symbol. Today, the croissant is still known in most French tables for breakfast.
