as odysseus travels through the underworld he searches for Tiresias for the prophecy to save his men from the godess circe
he stops and prepares a sacrifice to attract the spirit of tiresias. as he is standing by the sacrifice he must fend off many other shades with the thirst for the blood of the sacrifice
the first shade to confront odysseus is one of his friend elpanor that lay dead in the hall of circe without a burial. He asks of odysseus to burn him and spread the ashes among the ship they used for the journey
the next shade to come forth is the one of Tiresias. Odysseus asks for the prophecy and in return he may drink of the blood form the sacrifice
Tiresias tells him to go to a land where the people have not used salted meat or have seen a seafaring ship. He tells him to bring an oar from a ship and when he passes by a local who asks him what it is he holds in his hand to plant it on the hill and make a sacrifice to the gods. if he does this he will live a full life and die of old age
