  • Under the Missouri Compromise of 1820, Maine is added as a free state. This satisfies those opposed to the expansion of slavery as well as the "slave powers" in congress.
  • A major provision of the Missouri Compromise was that slavery was not exist above 36 30' N. This satisfied The North, Since slavery would not be able to expand pass this imaginary line drawn across the Louisiana Purchase .

  • for the Southern slave holding states, Missouri is added to the union as a slave state. The addition of Missouri as a slave state provides more balance to the union in terms of free slave states.
