The Spanish and their allies were recovering from their loss, while the Aztec were suffering from smallpox, a disease brought from the Spanish. All of the Spanish had built up an immunity, but the Aztec did not. Over the course of five months, almost half the Aztec population had died. Cuauhtemoc became the new emperor after Cuitlahuac died.
An Unforeseen Enemy
Cortes returned to Tenochtitlan, but this time with more people. The allies of the Aztec turned on them as soon as they saw the Spanish power. The Aztec had nobody to help them in the battle, and with their population decimated, it was very hard to hold their city.

The Final Battle
The Aztec survived for 75 days, without food or water because the Spanish blocked all paths of transportation. The Aztec surrendered in 1521. Their emperor, Cuauhtemoc, was hanged. The Aztec empire had fallen, and Cortes was the new governor of New Spain.
