  • Introduction
  • "once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary...Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak december..."
  • In the beginning of the poem the speaker is placidly reading at midnight during december.
  • "vainly I had sought to borrow from my books surcease of sorrow- sorrow for the lost lenore-"
  • Conflict
  • The speaker tries to distract himself from his despair by reading a book in his chamber.
  • "open here i flung the shutter, when, with a many flit and flutter, in there there stepped a stately raven of the saintly days of yore."
  • Rising Actions
  • The rising actions consist of the raven flyingin and the speaker entreating the bird of why he has come.
  • '"Prophet" said I, "thing of evil! -prophet still... tell me truly I implore... is there balm in Gilead?..."'
  • Climax
  • nevermore
  • At the climax the speaker thinks that the raven is an ominous bird who came to terrorize him because of Lenore.
  • '"Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend"... Leave my loneliness unbroken.!"'
  • Falling Actions
  • During the falling actions he is uttering to the bird to leave him alone in his home.
  • The resolution is that the shadow of his despair will never leave him.
  • "And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor shall be lifted -nevermore!"
