The smallpox outbreak affected the strength of the Aztec army and killed half the population in Tenochtitlan in five months
An Unforeseen Enemy
After the Spanish regrouped they attacked the city. Cotes ordered the food supply and aqueducts to be stopped, starving the city. The defenses were already weak and with the food and water supply gone the defenses crumbled. The Spanish even got other tribes with them who were part of the Triple Alliance. The siege of Tenochtitlan took 75 days and after the Aztecs surrendered the emperor, Cuauhtemoc was hanged and the city was destroyed.
