In this scene, "Brat" rests in the moiling dung heap because it is was warm as the sun on a summer afternoon. The dung squiggled with disgust. Without any food, she hoped to seek labor from the nearby Midwife, even if she didn't get money. She succeeded because of her determination.
At least I'll be really warm in the dung heap. Now everybody calls me dung beetle instead of brat. I saw Jane sharp, the midwife, and I will ask her to find work for me. I must remember to not look at her cockeyed. Then she may replenish my energy.
Once Brat, newly called Dung Beetle, found work as being the Midwife's apprentice, she preformed hard work for bad food, despite teasing from townspeople.
I am the midwife. You are my dumb-as-dung apprentice. Now get to work you dung beetle. And don't expect any money. You can have stale bread and sour ale if you want to eat. Sleep, well, sleep on the floor. I also better not catch you crooning.
At least I have some food and a bodice thanks to the midwife.
In her spare time, Dung Beetle went to the pond outside to find that some boys put a cat in a bag with an eel. Although she was afraid, she cut open the bag to let them out. Once caught, they ran away faster than a nascar racer.
Who would put the poor cat in a bag with an eel? I was sore afraid to get them out. Maybe I'll tell the bailiff. The cat could be my friend though! What will I call him?
Run!! Hurry before the scrawny dung beetle gets us!!
