Even though he may not have the highest intelligence, he has hope. Charlie has an opportunity to get a surgery that will potentially increase his intelligence.
Right before Charlie Gordon is getting the surgery, he has mixed emotions. He is nervous but also very happy because he has the chance to finally be smart which has been his life long dream.
After becoming very intelligent, Charlie is given his own lab. The purpose of this lab is for research on this surgery and if it is successful.
Charlie realizes that after the first test subject, Algernon the mouse, becomes less intelligent and dies, the same will happen to him. He becomes very sick and starts becoming less and less intelligent. He forgets things and even forgets where he lives.
After getting his job back at the factory, things were not going well. Charlie is back to his old self like he was before the surgery. He eventually fleas to New York in hope of starting a new life.
