  • "The Ransom of Red Chief" by O. Henry
  • Hey little boy! Would you like some candy and a nice ride?
  • ummmm....
  • I never want to go home!!! Now, let's play the scout game. I'm the scout and you are the stockade that I ride to warn the settlers that the Indians are coming.
  • I'll be away doing some business. I'll be back sometime this afternoon.
  • I'm not as strong as I used to be, but I think I can promise you ten minutes.
  • How long can you hold him?
  • Two criminals named Bill and Sam kidnapped a kid named Johnny Dorset, son of Ebenezer Dorset (a very rich man) for money to commit another crime. Johnny put up a fight but they got him in the car and took him to the cave near town. (O. Henry, p. 71)
  • As the criminals barely lasted one night with Johnny, Johnny told Sam and Bill that his name was Red Chief. Red Cheif did not want to go home and loved that he was taken away from home. In the morning, Bill was left with entertaining Red Chief and Sam went to go mail the letter to Mr. Dorset. Bill couldn't handle Red Chief's behavior and sent him home w/o the money. Sam came back and so was Red Chief. (O. Henry, p. 72-78)
  • Sam and Bill received a response from Ebenezer Dorset that told them that if Mr. Dorset took Red chief off of their hands, they would have to pay him $200. After so much arguing about the ransom, they finally agreed to give the $200 to Mr. Dorset. They had to bribe Red chief, telling him his dad bought him weapons for when he got home. In return Sam and Bill received 10 minutes to run before Red Chief tried to catch up with them. (O. Henry, p. 78-79)
