Storyboard Text

  • Winston decides to walk on the streets of the proles to get some answers.
  • Proles are the only chance we have at the truth.
  • "I don't know. He better not get caught."
  • "What is he doing here!?"
  • Winston never really gets clear answer from the man and realizes that "[t]he old man's memory was nothing but a rubbish heap of details" (78).
  • "We don't have those. Stop Asking!"
  • "What was life like when you were my age?"
  • Winston leaves the pub and starts wandering. He ends up...
  • "I want a PINT!"
  • ...where he bought his diary!
  • How did I let myself come here?
  • After the initial shock, he decides to go inside to avoid more suspicion.
  • Winston knew that it was dangerous when he first came to buy the diary and while being here again, "[a] twinge of fear went through him" (79).
  • "Wow, this is set up like someone could stay in here."
  • "I'm selling all of the furniture in this room."
  • Especially since the room had no telescreen, Winston got the idea that "it would probably be quite easy to rent the room for a few dollars a week, if he dared to take the risk" (Orwell 82).
  • After having a good chat with the man from the shop, Winston reenters the street.
  • Winston was shaken up after this event, but he tried to take his mind off it when he got home by writing in his diary.
  • Just walk past him like you didn't even see him.
  • Oh no, I knew it. They are spying on me. Just act normal.
  • Winston really tried to think of something to write down but all he could think about was "the thing that would happen to him after the Thought Police took him away" (87).
  • WAR IS PEACE FREEDOM IS SLAVERY IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
  • They're going to take me in the night, aren't they?
  • I'll never get out alive.
