Washington desperately needed a win because he had suffered a loosing streak earlier so he planned to attack the British sometime unexpected
December 25, 1776 (christmas night), Washington and his soldiers crossed the Delaware in a surprise attack on the British.
The army crossed the freezing river but didn't make it in time for a night battle, so they decided to attack in the early morning.
The Patriots attacked the British Christmas morning while some of the British were still asleep. It was so unexpected that the British were unprepared and outnumbered.
George Washington and the others won this battle and even though it was small, it served as the turning point of the war.
