  • In this scene two poorly gentlemen are trying to collect money for the poor. When they ask Scrooge if he wants to donate he freaks out. He believes he gives the poor enough money through taxes. The two men endeavored when they were trying to get scrooge to donate. This shows indirect characterization because. From this scene you can infer that scrooge is a mean selfish man. The actually story does not say that he mean directly.

  • "'If they would rather die,' said Scrooge 'they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population'"
  • Marley returns
  • In this scene Marley returns from the grave to warn Scrooge about the 3 spirits that are coming for him. He also warns scrooge about the damage he is causing. This scene sets what the theme is going to be for the rest of the story.
  • "'Oh'! 'captive, bound, and double-ironed," cried the phantom, "not to know, that ages of incessant labor, by immortal creatures, for this earth must pass into eternity before the good of which it is susceptible is all developed'".
  • "Scrooge muttered, with an unusual catching in his voice, that it was a pimple"(633).
  • In this scene scrooge is a young boy outside the school house.All the boys went off together to get ready for Christmas. Scrooge is all alone with no one to turn to. This scene shows internal conflict because Scrooge is starting to realize were it all went wrong.

  • "'It matters little,' she said softly. ' To you , very little. Another idol has displaced me; and, if it can cheer and comfort you in time to come as I would have tried to do, I have no just cause to grieve'"(638).
  • In this scene the spirit brings Scrooge back to the time when Belle breaks up with Scrooge. This scene shows internal conflict because Belle is very unhappy where there relationship is.
  • The breakup
  • In this scene the Ghost Of Christmas Present first come to Scrooge to help show what Scrooge is missing out on. This scene shows indirect characterization because you can infer that the ghost is a kind man but the story does not directly say that.
  • The second spirit arrives
  • "'I am the Ghost Of Christmas Present,' said the spirit. 'Look upon me'"(643)!
  • "'And they cling to me, appealing from their fathers. This boy is ignorance. This girl is want. Beware of them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see the written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased'"(654).
  • In this scene the spirit shows the two children under his robe. This scene also shows symbolism because the two children resemble what England was like back in the 1800's. England was hiding the poor in prisons and factory. The spirit is hiding the children under neath his robe just like England.
