Welcome to Beautiful Hartford,Conneticut
Thomas noticed that this young girl,Alice, was deaf and he wanted to help. He helped her learn to spell and write. Thomas was intrigued and wanted to help her communicate. Thomas and Alice's father decided to do a survey and they saw many others around them that were deaf too.
They raised enough money for Thomas to go to Europe, where deaf children were being formally educated. He hoped to go there and learn their ways and bring back some things to America to educate deaf students.
Thomas met a girl named Abbe Roch, and he followed her back to Paris for four months learning French Sign Language. After the four months, Thomas invited Abbe to go back to Conneticut with him and she agreed.
In 1817 they opened the first school for the deaf and they had 31 students. The school was very beneficial and much needed.
