  • Characterization
  • The short story "The Devil and Tom Walker" was based and themed about Greed and temptation, how easily the two effect and can change a life. The main character, Tom took deals and job from the devil because of his temptation and greed. Soon leading to ruining his life and effecting all in his life.
  • Conflict
  • The point of view in this story is 3rd person. This is obvious because the narrator or how the story is portrayed is without feelings or direct feelings of the characters. Going through the story explaining the events as a watcher and not as a person inside the heads of the characters.
  • Romanticism 1
  • Each character has its own part and the significance in the short story. The main and most obvious are, Tom and his wife, The Devil. The devil is temptation and the price of sins. The corrupt husband and wife stand for the people giving in , allowing to be weak towards the temptation. In this case the two were selfish and gave in to the thought of money. With greed and temptation it leads to
  • Romanticism 2
  • The conflicts in the story are between the couple and their characters. When the gold is offered and denied by tom, his wife hunts out against him. Getting herself killed. Later Tom picks wealth and greed over the mourning of his wife. Later living in absolute misery and ruining his life
  • The first example of American Romanticism is when Tom goes into the woods and escapes reality to a almost fiction/ mystical. American Romanticism is about freedom and an escape from reality. So when the cabin and the "caped creature" is added it shows the part of romanticism.
  • Another example of romanticism is the final part when Tom gets karma handed to him after all the greedy acts committed. This is one of the ideas from American Romanticism. That karma always come back to the people who deserve it
