The year is 2081 and the world has finally reached evolution of sameness and equality.
The government has changed all of the houses to look the same. All of the men and women are treated equally and are given handicaps if a feature or talent makes them better than anyone else. Weights for the taller and skinnier and masks for the prettier. The world has become equal and everyone and everything is uniform.
These two people are George and Hazel Bergeron. George has an earpiece handicap, where as Hazel doesn't. Hazel is not as intelligent as George and doesn't think as he does, so she was not given a handicap. George is intelligent and thinks about things and he is also tall, so he has weights around his neck.
This is Harrison Bergeron and he is George and Hazel's son. Harrison is described as a dangerous, very tall, young kid. He has multiple handicaps because he stands out from everyone else and the government does not want him to have contact with other people.
As said in the story, the ballet dancers all dance at the same level. Even though a few are more talented, they have handicaps that keep them at a lower level with the other girls. The government is trying to limit the potential of everyone so that they can all be the same.
Soon enough, Harrison was killed after escaping from jail because he tried to reach his full potential. He was the one chance society had to be able to realize that they have potential to become what they believe.
