  • In 1973 represntatives from Indigenous groups met at the Arctic Peoples Conference. The conference marked the beginning of international co-operation among Indigenous groups
  • The Arctic Peoples Conference helped inspire the formation of the World Council of Indigenous Peoples and the Inuit Circumpolar Confrence
  • The Inuit Circumpolar Conference represented about 160,000 Inuit
  • Lead by George Manuel, the World Council of Indigenous Peoples was one of the first international groups to focus on Indigenous rights
  • World Council of Indigenous Peoples stopped functioning in 1996, but it played a very important role in developing the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
