  • Nobles
  • Emperor/Monarch
  • Peasants
  • The peasants were connected to the nobles by serfdom
  • Russia was trying to obtain a world power and compete with the West.
  • The Serfs were emancipated in order to modernize Russia and also build a stronger military.
  • These came in the form of joint-stock companies which incurred a foreign debt by the tsarist government.
  • Russian industrialization spurred forth from foreign investments.
  • Large factories and private workshops dominated state and foreign capital.
  • Worker discontent grew in the wake of the Russo-Japanese war and the tsarist repression.
  • A revolution struck in 1905 involving strikes and rural uprising. The tsarist was able to maintain control throughout the revolution until it folded in 1917
