Dred Scott was born into slavery, in Virginia around 1800. In 1830 his master Peter Blow moved to St.Louis,MIsssouri, taking Dred and the rest of the slaves with him.
Peter Blow died in 1832 which resulted in Dred Scott being sold to an army surgeon named Dr. John Emerson and his wife.
Dr. Emerson died in 1843 leaving his wife as a widow and and leaving Dred Scott along with his wife too, Harriet Robinson who was also another slave.
After being denied manumission from Emerson's wife, Dred decided that he was going to take the matter to court. The court also denied his and his wife's freedom since they couldn't prove that they were owned by Mrs. Emerson.
Dred and Harriet were eventually able to live free lives, just to have it taken away from them two years after they have gained their freedom.
After 10 years of fighting for his freedom, Dred Scott and his wife regained it. Although freedom was regained, Dred wasn't able to enjoy it to the fullest because of the sad fact that he died 9 months later. This whole ordeal created tension between the states which led to the start of a ruthless war.
