Things did get better after that! Mr. Lee got rid of me for my insubordination and the musician of Virginia bought me. He taught me how to clean and tune the piano, and later how to play. Life was easier but still hard.

With the end of the war, came the end of slavery! I had finally reached the end of the chaos! Unfortunately slave laws were replaced with Jim Crow laws. Blacks had to be separate from whites.
Separate but equal they said. Whites got the better education, cars, bathrooms. Blacks were still treated like crap. They even did sly things like take our voting rights away with tests.
I have a dream! Equality!
