  • Washington, 1947
  • 1956, as the cold war develops, competition of the US against Soviets intensifies. In February 1947, the British government announced that they cannot afford to pay troops in Greece and Turkey, these countries could easily come under Soviet's control. So Truman decided to lend an hand.
  • My president sir! I have urgent news to tell you!
  • Britain... Why must you be poor?
  • Truman announced his 'doctrine' in a speech to the US congress on 12 March 1947. America then has announced to the world that it would play a leading part in world politics. This is support for anyone who wanted to fight communism. It was the idea of containment. In Greece and Turkey this was successful. The communist side was defeated. Eventually, it was extended to the whole world which led to war in Korea and Vietnam.
  • Individual liberty Freedom of Speech No Communism No more isolationism
  • Another strand of American policy emerged in 1947. In Washington, there was a belief that communism could only be stopped if Western Europe became wealthy. This is General George Marshall, and his plan was known as the Marshall Plan.
  • I would offer massive money to Western Europe, to end Communism!
  • With the rebuild of Western Europe, America is also developing and expanding it's trading and business partners across Europe.

  • With the rebuild of Western Europe, the influence of communism was significantly decreased. Because of this, Russia was infuriated and let out campaign posters to badmouth America. However, America was already in lead at achieving their aim.
  • We are losing influence over Europe..
  • Meanwhile in Russia...
  • This must be the work of America!! We need to do something to spread our ideology...
