The setting takes place in a U.S. southern state on a small plantation, where the narrator and his new baby brother live.
Doodle, the narrator brother, was born with disabilities and health conditions. The narrator cannot except having his brother different.
The narrator's pride convinces him to teach Doodle to be normal. Once he can walk he believes Doodle can be taught other things. One day during the summer, the family finds a red ibis that dies, Doodle feels a connection with the bird.
On the last day of training Doodle feels very weak. Narrator mad, decides to go home and a storm rolls in. as they start running back the narrator ends up leaving Doodle behind.
The narrator goes back to find that he had pushed Doodle way to hard and had killed him.
Never push someone past there limits when you don't know what they are.
