The Story of San Miguel de Guadalupe by: Brooke Voakes
In September of 1526, the Europeans and their leader Lucas Vazquez de Ayllon found land near Winyah Bay and settled there.
We have found some land!
After settling here they figured out how many resources there were, they started growing plantations and making money.
After weeks slave owners bought slaves to work and grow crops so the owners had a way to make money and to trade with other groups.
This is so much work for us slaves.
Two months later, these people realize they are running out of resources and winter is coming. They have to make a choice to either abandon the town or stay during winter and have no food, water, or shelter.
The town only lasted three months because everyone decides to leave San Miguel de Gualdape and never come back.
